ウィリアム・モリス・ギャラリー。
When I went to Walthamstow, I have a particular place I really wanted to go.
It was William Morris Gallery.
ウィリアム・モリスはイギリスを代表するデザイナー。
壁紙などのテキスタイルが有名ですが、実は小説や詩も書いていたり多彩な人。
私がウィリアム・モリスを知ったのはおそらく母の影響。
リバティ・プリントのように繊細な植物のデザインの壁紙などで有名です。
ロンドン観光に来る人は、おそらくV&A博物館で目にしているかも。
こちらはそのウィリアム・モリスが少年期を過ごした家を利用したギャラリー。
なんと入場料は無料です。
William Morris was one of the most famous designers represent UK.
He is famous as a textile designer but he was also a novelist and poet.
His design is known as a beautiful detailed designs of nature.
If you had been V&A Museum, you might have seen his textile.
This is his gallery museum in the house he spent when he was young.
Admission free!
ジョージアンの家を使ったミュージアム。
入り口を入ると、広いホールはミュージアムショップになっていて、
彼の美しいデザインのグッズであふれています。
そして大きな窓から入ってくる光でとっても明るい。
The house is Georgian.
When you enter the house, you see the museum shop in the big entrance hall which is very bright from the sunlight coming in through from big windows.
入り口右奥にはコンサヴァトリーがあり、カフェになっています。
ガーデンが見渡せて最高。
On the right hand side, there is a conservatory and it is a cafe with a great view of the back garden.
初めて行ったのですが、特別展をやっていて、
今回はメイ・モリス展でした。
メイ・モリスはウィリアムの次女で、父のように刺繍をデザインし、それを刺した刺繍家で、
展示品には息を呑むほど美しい刺繍がずらり。
There is a special exhibition of May Morris now.
She was the second daughter of William Morris and an embroidery designer.
There was some beautiful embroideries of her works.
かわいいデザインもあり、このミトンや右上の動物たちと小さなおうち?見たいな刺繍がお気に入り。
I love those mittens and cute designs of the top-right.
でも私が見たかったのは、やっぱりウィリアム・モリスのデザイン。
And of course, the designs of William Morris.
緻密なデザインに圧倒。
でも、私が見たかったのは、レプリカでもよいので実際に壁紙や家具なんかに使用されているものだったのですが、
こちらのギャラリーは、端切れをウィンドウに刺している、まさに博物館的な感じでした。
でもタダですから文句は言えない。
素晴らしいギャラリーだと思います。
Marvelous detailed designs.
But, what I wanted to see was not a piece of paper or cloths.
I wanted to see those designs on wall or furniture, actually in use.
However, it was free. That was brilliant.
広い裏庭は公園のようで、ギャラリーのお客じゃなくても自由に散策できます。
わりとセンターからも駅からも遠いところにあるのに、この日は結構たくさんの人がいました!
やはり、ウィリアム・モリス、人気あるのですね～!
私の家から近いところや、郊外にもウィリアム・モリスゆかりの家があるらしいので、
機会があればぜひ行ってみたいと思います!
The back garden is like a public park.
Anyone can go and walk in even though you don't come for the gallery.
The gallery was a bit far from the center of London, or the station, but there were lots of people there!
It was really popular.
There are some other places related to William Morris near our flat (West London) and somewhere in England, I would like to go there someday.
