先日クリスタルパレスを歩いていると、よさげなカフェ＆パン屋さんを発見。

I found a nice bakery & cafe in Crystal Palace.

ウィンドウに並んだおいしそうなパンに魅かれて、ついふらふらと。

Their bread looked very nice....!  I couldn't just passed it......

カウンターにはずらりとケーキやセイヴォリー（おかず系）のペイストリーが。

The counter was full of cakes and pastries. 　They have savoury pastries too.

どれもとってもおいしそう…。

この日はランチに来たのですが、私の目はついついいつもケーキにむいてしまう。


They all looked YUMMY!!
I came here for lunch but I couldn't take my eyes off from cakes....!

パンはとても人気のようで、この日もお客さんがひっきりなしにパンを買いに来ていました。

パンの小麦はすべてオーガニック。

売っているケーキやパンはもちろん、ジャムやシリアルもすべて手作りだそうです。


They seem very popular, customers come without a break.
They use organic flour.
Their bread, cakes jams, cereals.... are all homemade.

お店は縦に長く、カウンターの前などはお客さんもよく並んでいるので、落ち着くとはいえないけど、
フリーのWifiもあり、ひとり朝ごはんやランチ、お茶にも活躍しそう。


The shop is long to the back.  They have free Wifi too.

この日のランチは、冷蔵コーナー?に並んでいたサンドイッチとパスタ、
それだけでは足りないかも、と相方はレバニーズのペイストリーも買ったのですが、
ペイストリーにはサラダをつけてくれてきれいに盛り付けてくれて、
結局は食べ切れませんでした!

サンドイッチのパンはふわふわもっちりでフレッシュ、おいしかった！

ペイストリーは結局持ち帰った後忘れてしまい、一日以上置いてから食べたのですが、
オーブンで温めた後食べても、生地がさくさくでフレッシュなのに驚き!!

具はほうれん草で、カレー風味のようなスパイスが入っていて、おいしかった！

こんどはぜひぜひ、スィーツにトライしなければ!!


We bought a sandwich, pasta, and a Lebanese pastry.
We didn't expect they put salad with pastry.
In the end, we couldn't finish, so we took away the pastry to home.
We forgot about it and we had it a day later after we reheated it in the oven.
It was still fresh!  I was impressed!
It has spicy (curry?) spinach inside.  It was delicious.
The sandwich was good too, the bread was so soft and fresh.
I have to try their sweets next time!

先日クリスタルパレスを歩いていると、よさげなカフェ＆パン屋さんを発見。

I found a nice bakery & cafe in Crystal Palace.

ウィンドウに並んだおいしそうなパンに魅かれて、ついふらふらと。

Their bread looked very nice....!  I couldn't just passed it......

カウンターにはずらりとケーキやセイヴォリー（おかず系）のペイストリーが。

The counter was full of cakes and pastries. 　They have savoury pastries too.

どれもとってもおいしそう…。

この日はランチに来たのですが、私の目はついついいつもケーキにむいてしまう。

The Otsu Festival ~大津祭

It's the time again, the Otsu Festival!! (This weekend!)
I would like to show my favourite festival as Otsu is my hometown!  (Photos are from 2011)

今年もやってきました、大津祭の季節。
地元出身としてちょっとアピール。

Sunday is the festival day.
The 13 floats start to parade from Tenson shrine, the home of the festival.
The parade starts from the morning to the early evening.


日曜は朝から１３基の曳山が天孫神社を出発して巡業を行います。
 

The musicians get on the floats, and play the traditional festival music all day.
The music is slightly changed to more speedy and exciting music, and the town really comes alive.


お囃子隊も全員曳山の上にのり、大津の町はお囃子に包まれます。
 宵山のときよりノリのよいものに変わったりして、お祭りムード満点。
 

The float is heavy.  We need lots of people to draw it.

曳山は何人もの人たちが綱で引いていきます。

 Otsu has the biggest lake in Japan so that our city is a sister city to Michigan in USA, where also have a lake.
Some students from Michigan come to Otsu every year for the internship.
I think the people in the photo are those students.....
They were doing volunteer job to draw floats.
I thought it is a brilliant idea.
It's quite rare chance to join the foreign festival not only to watch it.
By the way, my partner was very excited too.
(I guess the festival is really "The Japan")


滋賀県は湖つながりでアメリカのミシガン州と姉妹都市であり、
ミシガン州の学生が毎年研修に来ているのですが、
たぶん、おそらく、その学生たちであろう外国人たちが、曳山を引くボランティアをやっていました。
日本のお祭りを見ることはあっても、参加することはそうそうないと思うので、とてもいい機会だと思います。
ちなみにうちの相方もめちゃくちゃ興奮していました。
（すごく「日本」らしいですしね）

The float is very heavy and it has only 2 wheels.
It's very hard to change the direction.
(They have to lift up the float to change the direction.)


とっても重いうえに二輪の曳山、方向転換はかなり大変です。
 （みんなで持ち上げて一気に方向を変えます!）

The parade is not only marching.
They stop at several points and show the mechanical dolls' performance, which is the main of the festival.
Those dolls are the ones of the oldest in Japan although they were repaired some times in the history, therefore they are not the originals.
Those dolls are all different from each floats.
The names and the stories of the performance of the floats were adopted from the Noh, Japanese classical drama, legends, and historical events.
(It's not related to area itself)


ただお囃子隊が曳山でパレードするのではなく、
ルート中、いくつもの箇所でストップし、このお祭りのメインである曳山のからくりを見せます。
からくり人形たちは（修理しているのでオリジナルではありませんが、）日本でもかなり古いものです。
曳山ごとにすべて違い、山の名・からくりの由来は能楽や故事から取っています。
（別にその曳山のエリアの歴史に由来、とかではないと思う。）

This is Gekkyuden-zan, another name is "Tsuru kame-zan".
The story comes from the Noh "tsuru kame (crane and turtle)".
"Tsuru kame" is the story about the Chinese emperor had a party to celebrate a new year.
The doll with pink kimono has a crane on his head, and the doll with green kimono has a turtle on her head.
They are dancers and they are dancing in front of the emperor.


こちらは月宮殿山。別名「鶴亀山」。
能「鶴亀」にちなみ、鶴と亀に扮した踊り子が皇帝の目の前で舞を踊っているところ。

This is Seioubo-zan, another name is "Momo-yama" (Momo means peach)
Seioubo (Xi Wangmu) is a Chinese goddess who had a special orchard of longevity peaches.
But somehow,  they added the episode of Momotaro to the mechanical doll's performance.
Momotaro is the popular hero of Japanese folklore, who was born from a peach.
In this photo, Momotaro just came out from the peach.


こちらは西王母山。 別名「桃山」。
中国の西王母という女仙が長寿の桃を与えた、という伝説に、なぜか日本の桃太郎が合体。
これは桃から桃太郎が生まれてきたところ。

After the doll's performances, the musicians scattered Chimaki and tea towels from the floats.
Chimaki means a traditional Chinese sweets, made of glutinous rice.
But in the Otsu festival,  Chimaki means a talisman. (you can't eat it, but they also scatter edible one too! )
It's very hard to get Chimaki.  If you get it, you are very lucky! 
Chimaki protects you from bad luck for a year if you put it near the front door of your house. 
I used to collect chimaki from all of the floats when I was a little....


からくりのあとはお楽しみ、厄除けの粽や手ぬぐいがばらまかれます。
毎年ほんの少しだけなので、取るのに一苦労。
小学校のとき、何の意味もなく各曳山のの粽を集めるため曳山を一日追っかけていたなあ…
ちなみにこの年は、相方の外国人の魅力を使わせていただきました。（笑）

The trick to get chimaki is to get attention from the musicians. lol

I believed the Otsu festival was the best in Japan when I was a kid since I didn't know about Gion Festival.
(Gion Festival in Kyoto is one of the biggest festival in Japan.)
But, I think you might enjoy the Otsu festival more than Gion festival.
Because it is dreadfully too crowded to walk around at the Gion festival.... lol
The Otsu festival is smaller, but you can get closer and it's still similar to the Gion festival.
So, come and see their nice smiles!!!


ちなみにその小学校のとき、お囃子のかっこいいお兄さんを追っかけていたのも事実です。（笑）

祇園祭の存在を知らなかった子供の頃は、この大津祭りが日本で一番のお祭りだと信じて疑いませんでした。（笑）
でも実は、祇園祭よりもっと楽しめるお祭りかもしれません。
祇園祭のように鬼ほど込んでないので…（笑）
こじんまりしているけれど、祇園祭と似ていて密に楽しめる分、お勧めです。

Yoiyama~the eve of the Otsu festival ~大津祭・宵山

I'd like to introduce the festival of my hometown.
Because, it's hold this weekend!  (Photos are from 2011.)

The Otsu festival is a festival that 13 floats parade around town with musical accompaniment,
very similar to the Gion festival in Kyoto, which is one of the biggest festival in Japan.
It is said that the festival started almost 400 years ago.
The oldest float was made in 1635.
In that era, merchants and bourgeois was building up their strength.
They competed to make their floats gorgeous.
You can see those floats decorated with important cultural properties and beautiful craftsmanship.



今日は、私の地元のお祭り、大津祭りをご紹介したいと思います。
というのも、今週末開催なので!
（2年前の写真を出すいいきっかけに…）

大津祭りは、１３基の個性ある曳山があり、お囃子がなる、祇園祭によく似たお祭りです。
 始まったのは江戸時代と考えられており、 一番古い曳山は１６３５年に作られました。
江戸時代に花開いた町人文化により、大津町人の財力をつぎ込んで作られた曳山は、
歴史的にも重要な飾り、細工で施されています。

Each of 13 areas has a float. 
The floats are built a week before the festival.
In the eve of the Otsu festival, musicians (boys from an area of a float) play music on the floats.


曳山は祭りの一週間前に組み立てられます。
宵山では、そのエリアごとにある曳山でコンチキチンのお囃子が奏でられます。

The festival is held in the second weekend in October.
But it is quite hot in October in Japan in recent years as this year.
The photo was taken in 2011, it was hot too.
We saw some people wearing Yukata (Summer kimono).


毎年１０月の体育の日に行われるお祭りですが、今年はまだ日本も暑いようですね。
この年もかなり暑くて、浴衣の人もちらほらいました。

Traditionally, only boys are allowed to get on the floats.
I dreamt to get on the floats when I was a little even though it is impossible.
Some floats are opened for male visitors to see floats inside,
and my partner DID it!!!
I dreamt to get on it for years and years, but he just did it......
Discrimination!!!!
....but also I want them to protect the traditional way.....


曳山にあがることが出来るのは、伝統により男だけ。
 私も子供の頃からいつか乗りたいと（無理）、お囃子のお兄さんたちにあこがれていました。
しかし、ビジターであれど、男の人には開放している山もあり、
このとき、相方はいとも簡単に乗りやがった!!
私が十数年もあこがれてやまないあの曳山の上に!!
男女差別!!
と、いいたいところですが、やはり伝統は守って欲しい、という矛盾…。

The most famous thing in the festival is mechanical dolls on the floats.
In the eve, you can see those dolls closely.  (but they don't move.)
In the parade of the festival, those dolls move on the floats.
The dolls tell a little story which is related to the name of the float.
For example, the left photo is the doll from the float called "Genji-Yama".
The lady doll is the author of the Tale of Genji which is the classic of Japanese literature.
She is writing the story.


大津祭りの曳山で一番注目されるのはからくり。
宵山では、本祭では曳山の上にあるからくりを間近で見ることができます。  （動かないけれど。）
 山の名前に由来のあるからくりが演じられます。
たとえば、左の写真は源氏山、なので源氏物語を書いている紫式部。

In the houses of the officers in each area, you can see the important cultural properties of the festival.
This is the Belgian curtain for the back of the float.


各町の役員の家では、お祭りの重要文化財も間近で見ることができます。
 これははるばるベルギーから来た見送り幕で、重要文化財。

There were some events as well.
We went to the open house of the Japanese traditional house.  (It's still in use!)
It has very old cooking range and well.
This kind of old houses are called #Eel's nest" as it's very long the back.


お祭りにあわせて、いろいろイベントもやっていました。
これは古くから残る町屋を公開していました。
かまどに井戸!　これも相当古そうな家。
いわゆる「うなぎの寝床」で、奥にず～っと続いています。

This is the exhibition of the Otsu-e.  Traditional drawings of our hometown since Edo era.

こちらは大津絵。
大津に江戸時代から伝わる独特な絵です。

Speaking of festival......　we can't miss stalls!
In Tenson Shrine, which is the home of this festival, there were lots of stalls.


でも、やっぱりお祭りといったら…これですよね。
 お祭りの本拠地である天孫神社には夜店がたくさん。

キャラクターのお面。（今気づいたけど、時代がわかるわ…）

Beautiful red and black godfishes....

赤と黒がゆらゆらきれいな金魚たち。

Anyway, food!!
We can have stir fried noodles in UK, but I think the best is from stalls from Japanese festival.


…でもやっぱり花より団子。
 イギリスでもよく見る焼きそば、やっぱり日本の屋台の焼きそばが一番!

Candy apples are popular in UK, also in Japan!
(We also have candy grapes, candy mandarin, candy strawberries....)
I always bought one when I was a kid.


イギリスでもあるけれど、やっぱりりんご飴もお祭りには欠かせない。
 子供の頃は毎回買っていました。

Fresh fish-shaped pancakes!

たい焼きもお祭りならでは!

I prefer the eve to the regular festival because there is less people....
I recommend to do a night walk with Japanese traditional music. ;)


本祭よりも、宵山のほうが待ったりしていてゆっくり出来るので好きな私。
コンチキチンのお囃子を聴きながら、秋の夜長にお散歩してみてください。

と、いいたいところですが、やはり伝統は守って欲しい、という矛盾…。

The most famous thing in the festival is mechanical dolls on the floats.
In the eve, you can see those dolls closely.  (but they don't move.)
In the parade of the festival, those dolls move on the floats.
The dolls tell a little story which is related to the name of the float.
For example, the left photo is the doll from the float called "Genji-Yama".
The lady doll is the author of the Tale of Genji which is the classic of Japanese literature.
She is writing the story.


大津祭りの曳山で一番注目されるのはからくり。
宵山では、本祭では曳山の上にあるからくりを間近で見ることができます。  （動かないけれど。）
 山の名前に由来のあるからくりが演じられます。
たとえば、左の写真は源氏山、なので源氏物語を書いている紫式部。

In the houses of the officers in each area, you can see the important cultural properties of the festival.
This is the Belgian curtain for the back of the float.


各町の役員の家では、お祭りの重要文化財も間近で見ることができます。
 これははるばるベルギーから来た見送り幕で、重要文化財。

There were some events as well.
We went to the open house of the Japanese traditional house.  (It's still in use!)
It has very old cooking range and well.
This kind of old houses are called #Eel's nest" as it's very long the back.


お祭りにあわせて、いろいろイベントもやっていました。
これは古くから残る町屋を公開していました。
かまどに井戸!　これも相当古そうな家。
いわゆる「うなぎの寝床」で、奥にず～っと続いています。

This is the exhibition of the Otsu-e.  Traditional drawings of our hometown since Edo era.

こちらは大津絵。
大津に江戸時代から伝わる独特な絵です。

Speaking of festival......　we can't miss stalls!
In Tenson Shrine, which is the home of this festival, there were lots of stalls.


でも、やっぱりお祭りといったら…これですよね。
 お祭りの本拠地である天孫神社には夜店がたくさん。

キャラクターのお面。（今気づいたけど、時代がわかるわ…）

Beautiful red and black godfishes....

赤と黒がゆらゆらきれいな金魚たち。

Anyway, food!!
We can have stir fried noodles in UK, but I think the best is from stalls from Japanese festival.


…でもやっぱり花より団子。
 イギリスでもよく見る焼きそば、やっぱり日本の屋台の焼きそばが一番!

Candy apples are popular in UK, also in Japan!
(We also have candy grapes, candy mandarin, candy strawberries....)
I always bought one when I was a kid.


イギリスでもあるけれど、やっぱりりんご飴もお祭りには欠かせない。
 子供の頃は毎回買っていました。

Fresh fish-shaped pancakes!

たい焼きもお祭りならでは!

I prefer the eve to the regular festival because there is less people....
I recommend to do a night walk with Japanese traditional music. ;)


本祭よりも、宵山のほうが待ったりしていてゆっくり出来るので好きな私。
コンチキチンのお囃子を聴きながら、秋の夜長にお散歩してみてください。

ロンドン好きの皆様、最新フィガロジャポンのロンドン特集はごらんになりましたか?

フィガロの海外特集は日本にいたときから好きでしたが、
在住者さえよく知らない情報まで網羅しているフィガロのロンドン特集、
ロンドンに来てからも毎回楽しみにしています。

さて、その中でクリスタルパレスという、南ロンドンの町が取り上げられていました!

実はクリスタルパレスは、ちょうど先日イギリスでも、
クリスタルパレスの再建の計画が持ち上がったとニュースになり、話題になっていたところなのです。
（クリスタルパレスというのは19世紀に作られた、「パレス」の名の通り巨大なガラス張りの温室で、
80年前に焼け落ちて以来そのままになっていました。
クリスタルパレスの地名はそこから来ています。）

ちょうど新しいところを開拓したくてうずうずしていた私たち、
早速その話題のクリスタルパレスに行ってきました。


My favourite Japanese magazine, Figaro Japon featured London in the latest issue.
I always look forward to their London feature because they really know about London well!! 
(Even we who live in London don't know some places!)
In their issue, they picked Crystal Palace.
I had never been there and also we were interested as we saw the news about the plan of rebuilding Crystal Palace.
So we went there on Saturday.

駅を出たとたんにかわいい花屋さんが。

この時点で期待が高まる。


A cute flower shop at the station made my expectation rise.

ランチタイムから夕方までものすごくにぎわっていた、感じのよいレストラン。

奥には新鮮な魚をのせたカウンターが。

次回はぜひ行きたいな。


This restaurant was always full.
I saw the counter of fresh fishes.
I'd love to try this restaurant next time.

 

本当にヴィンテージの家具屋さんが多い。

家具を見ながらあれこれインテリアをシミュレーション。


There were lots of vintage furniture shops.
It's a fun to imagine the interior with watching furniture.

かわいいお店があったり…。

南ロンドンは治安の悪いところが多いので、
私も先入観で「クリスタルパレスは治安が悪い」と決め付けていたのですが、
 全然そんなことはなく、むしろセンスのよいお店があったりして、居心地が良さそう!


There were cute shops too.
I was thinking that most of South London area is dodgy.
But actually, Crystal Palace was not.
Nice vintage shops, cafes....  people looked nice.....  I totally changed my mind.

もちろんヴィンテージショップも。

ここはなんと、パブの一角にあるヴィンテージショップ!

ここにめちゃくちゃ私好みの60'sっぽいニットベストがあったのだけど…

耐えた!!　あたしゃ耐えたよ!!

This shop was in the corner of the pub!
I found a beautiful knit vest......  But I didn't buy it.  Good girl, me.

メインのストリートからちょっと離れたクリスタルパレス・アンティークス。

すみからすみまで、床から天井までぎっしりと積み上げられたヴィンテージの雑貨たちに圧倒。

〈本当に倒れてきそうで怖かった。それくらいぎゅうぎゅう！）

この裏手ではマーケットもあったみたいなのですが、〈たぶん食べ物だけ）
残念ながら遅すぎて見られず。

ヴィンテージショップの方も言っていましたが、
ほとんどのお店（ヴィンテージの）は週の中ごろから週末にかけて開いているので、
やはり週末に来るのが一番かと。

It was amazing that they have a huge stock of vintage.
(I was worried that they might fall on me from the shelf!)
There was a market at the back of this shop, but we were too late.
Local people said that shops in this area are opened from the mid week to weekend.
So I recommend you to visit Crystal Palace in weekend.

帰りはクリスタルパレスパーク〈クリスタルパレスの跡地）を通って帰りました。

木の頭がもう色づいている。秋だなあ。

もう少ししたら、紅葉できれいな時期になるかも。

春夏の、お花と新緑のロンドンもいいけれど、グレーのロンドンにはこの秋の季節が一番合うと思う。


We walked though the Crystal Palace park on the way back.
You see the leaves are colouring.
I think that Autumn is the best season for grey London.

ここがクリスタルパレスのあった場所。

まさになーんにも残っていません。

19世紀のオリジナルのデザインで復活してくれたらいいのだけれど。

今は大きなテレビ塔が立っています。

これを見て、横にいるフランス人に、「エッフェル塔みたいだね!」と言ったら、
「…フッ」と鼻で笑われました。

それにしてもほんとにグレーなロンドン…。（午後2時の写真）

でもここではこれが普通なので、 皆様ロンドンに来られるときは、
青空が見えたらラッキー!　くらいに思っておくといいかもしれないです。

It looks like Effiel Tower, doesn't it?

さてこの日の収穫。

半端ものソーサーと、私が探していた一人用ティーポット。

カップもそうですが、表面がうねっているデザインが好きです。

ロンドン好きの皆様、最新フィガロジャポンのロンドン特集はごらんになりましたか?

フィガロの海外特集は日本にいたときから好きでしたが、
在住者さえよく知らない情報まで網羅しているフィガロのロンドン特集、
ロンドンに来てからも毎回楽しみにしています。

さて、その中でクリスタルパレスという、南ロンドンの町が取り上げられていました!

実はクリスタルパレスは、ちょうど先日イギリスでも、
クリスタルパレスの再建の計画が持ち上がったとニュースになり、話題になっていたところなのです。
