3回に分けてご紹介する初回は、観光編です。
There are lots of fabulous spots in Margate!
I will write about my favourite places in 3 times, and the first one is addresses to SEE.
まずはこちら、マーゲイトで一番有名な観光名所、シェル・グロット。
訳すと「貝殻洞窟」なのですが、
This is the most famous sightseeing spot in Margate, Shell Grotto.
そのまんまです、こーんなにたくさんの貝殻で飾られた小さな洞窟!
It's a little cave covered with millions shells!
1835年に発見された、この何百万もの貝殻で飾られた洞窟は、
いまだに誰が、何のために作ったものか明らかにされていません。
発見されたからずっとガス灯で照らされていたため、全体的にすすで真っ黒に汚れています。
きれいにも出来るみたいなのですが、費用やコンディションの問題のため、そのままに。
It was found in 1835, and still no one knows why and who made this grotto.
Gas lamps were used in this grotto, so shells are black with carbon.
第2次世界大戦時に一部損壊しているものの、 ほぼそのままの状態で残っています。
ミステリアスなこの場所では、過去に交霊会も行われたとか。
A part of the grotto was broken in World War II, but otherwise the grotto remains perfectly.
It's so mysterious place that there were seances (gathering to receive messages from spirits or ghosts) held here in the past.

マーゲイトで一番古い建物の一つ、チューダーハウス。
ミュージアムとして中が公開されています。
One of the oldest building in Margate, Tudor House.
It's now museum and opened to public.
16世紀の建物で、中は凝った装飾などはないものの、当時の生活の様子を知ることができます。
It's a 16th century building.
The interior is simple but you can see the how people live in the house.

海辺の街マーゲイトは、イギリスを代表する画家、ターナーがよく訪れた場所としても知られています。
そしてその場所にたっているのが、こちらのターナー・コンテンポラリー・ミュージアム。
Margate is well known as the most famous British painter, Turner's favourite place.
And there is a museum called Turner Contemporary.
写実的な風景画家のイメージが強いターナーですが、実は印象派を30年も先取りしちゃったり、
当時ではかなりアートの先駆者だったみたいです。
そんなコンセプトなのか、こちらのミュージアムも、おもしろいコンテンポラリー作品が中心。
I imagine that Turner is a realistic landscape painter, but actually he was a pioneer of British art.
This museum is showing interesting contemporary pieces, like he did in his time.
ロンドン同様、こちらのミュージアムも入場無料というのがうれしいところ。
海辺の街で気軽にアートに触れてみてはいかがでしょう。
Great thing is admission free!
It is amazing to feel art casually.

さて、マーゲイトのランドマークといえば、こちらの「ドリームランド」！
イギリス最古とも言えるこの遊園地、なんと1920年代から続くそう!
そんな古い遊園地が、2015年にリニューアルオープン!
私は入れなかったのですが…
The most famous landmark in Margate is, this Dreamland!
It is the oldest British amusement park since the 1920's!!
This old amusement park reopened last year.
I didn't go there when I visited Margate, but.....
